1865. French carriage clock by Achille Brocot, Paris. No. 816

Achille Brocot (1817-1878) was mathematician and clockmaker, the eldest son of L.G.Brocot. In 1856 he was treasurer to La Societe des Horlogers in Paris, awarded First Class medal at the 1855. Paris Exhibition. His trademark was advertised in the 1864. Almanach Artistique as AB in a star. Inventor of pin pallet escapement that was designed for use with pendulum clocks ( "Brocot Escapement" Paris, 1860). Achille also invented perpetual calendar. [For hundreds of years, horologists have struggled in finding a device which would automatically take care of all the short months in the year displaying correct date all year around].
In 1862. Achille Brocot published a 97 page monograph devoted to what is now known as the Stern-Brocot tree.

Pictured here is a spectacular repeater carriage clock: the movement strikes hours and half hours on a gong and repeats the hours. Multicoloured gilt case with pink, yellow, rose gold and silver and silver inlaid corinthian pillars. Silver dial with Griffin, mythological creature with a winged lion's body and an eagle's head, symbol of strength and vigilance. No. 816. Available for sale.
