The Tag Heuer Monaco and Steve McQueen

Tag hit a home run when they took a gamble and launched the reissue Monaco way back in 1998. The watch was based on the Heuer automatic chronograph wristwatch originally introduced in 1969 in honour of the Monaco Formula 1 Grand Prix. The original Heuer Monaco was heralded by many as revolutionary for being the first automatic as well as the first square cased chronograph.

The Hollywood film star Steve McQueen wore the watch in the cult film 'Le Mans' in 1971. McQueen's association with the watch came about when he sought the advice of his friend Formula one racing driver Jo Siffert to increase the accuracy of his race car driver character. McQueen was no mean driver himself and raced both cars and motorcycles but in seeking to look more the part, McQueen had Siffert loan him one of his racing suits which was adorned with Gulf Oil's colors and an embroidered "Chronograph HEUER" crest. In order to complete his character's look, McQueen adorned his wrist with the newly introduced B model Calibre 12 Monaco - A perfect and most photogenic combination!

In the decades after his death the use of film stills has ensured that the Monaco remains synonymous with McQueen. Although the original watch was discontinued in the mid-1970s, the McQueen Monaco has become one of the most sought after vintage pieces with only a handful of the original models hitting the market in nice condition each year, and of course demand far exceeds supply. This backdrop meant that it made perfect sense for TAG Heuer to reissue the timepiece and the first models, released in 1998, were classy blue and grey models with a limited production run of only 5,000 pieces. With those models well received and selling fast TAG expanded the range and refreshed watch with an entirely new movements and more colour variations in 2003.
